So depending on the size of your hand, you may need to adjust the way you position your hand on this trackball. Pinkie fits into the slot in an unused base. Then the ring finger rests on the large right-click button. The middle finger then rests on the scroll wheel and is used to scroll or zoom and to press the wheel as a middle button. People with fairly small hands can use the first finger of the left button and move to the smaller up/down buttons. The ring finger and little finger are generally not used and are placed in designated grooves in the base of the trackball. Then the index or middle finger can be moved to use the scroll wheel or to press the wheel as a middle button. The middle finger rests on the large right or secondary button. People with large hands (and most people) will generally use the first finger positioned so that it rests on the left or main button and will be the one that moves to press the smaller up/down buttons. It takes some getting used to, but your thumb is the most dexterous finger you have and allows for very precise movements and selecting actions that would not be so easy with a mouse. If you’re used to other trackballs that center the ball, you’ll have to work with them to develop the muscle memory to use your thumb to roll the ball.
